Only Traces

happening, drawings, book 15 x 20cm (5’9”x7’8”),  Mexico City 2019 , collaboration with Sam Stevens

The “Only Traces” project borrows the everyday street stall as a disguise for an art work, and as a platform for the art of dialogue. Beginning with a fascination for spatial democracy, and the daily politics of walking through the streets of Mexico City - “Only Traces” expands a representative method of record keeping. Modeled after commonplace spontaneous street encounters and mobile street furniture, found forms and materials were incorporated to develop and design a stall on site. Choreographed and performed across 5 days, the event resulted in a collection of drawings and a book and manuscript for documenting the event.
This was an effort, through the dynamics of stranger and familiar, buyer and seller, artist and viewer, language barrier, to make contact. To illustrate the strangeness and arbitrariness of our individual mental worlds, their origins, and move beyond that to find meaning between.
